Lorenzo Gentile

Lorenzo is an early stage researcher at Technische Hochschule Köln. His work is focused developing and studying evolutionary optimisation methods with regard to mixed-integer problems involving uncertainty.

Lorenzo fostered an early passion for aircrafts by pursuing a career in aerospace engineering at renowned world-class institutions. A native of Rome, he attended the Aerospace Engineering program at the Turin Polytechnic Institute (Politecnico di Torino), where he obtained the Bachelor Degree and a Master Degree in Aerospace Engineering with a specialization in Fluid Dynamics.

During his tenure at the Politecnico, Lorenzo engaged in the 2Wheels PoliTO race motorbike project and in the Wide Body Twin-Aisle preliminary design team project. These extracurricular experiences helped Lorenzo boost his passion for working in teams on technically challenging problems. In the six years of study had the opportunity to be part of several projects in which he gained technical knowledge, teamwork and communication experience.

In 2016, Lorenzo interned at the Aerospace Centre of Excellence, research laboratory of the University of Strathclyde, where he worked for his Master’s thesis dissertation on the development of a new methodology of optimization of forefront composite material microstructural behaviour through the coupling of genetic algorithms and FE analysis. There, he had the opportunity to compare different optimization methods and manage their characteristics in order to create a multilevel mixed integer optimization on a problem with nonlinear constraints and uncertainty. Furthermore, he had the honour to present the results of his project in the AIRTEC 2017 International Congress in Munich and an extended paper of the same topic is due to be published.

Lorenzo’s successful experience in Glasgow, where he found an exceptional team and stimulating environment, combined with his ever growing interest in optimization methods, motivated him to become part of the UTOPIAE network as a research fellow.

In his spare time, Lorenzo is an avid cook and competitive athlete. In Rome, he served as captain of the C.C. Aniene flatwater canoeing team for 8 years and won several national competitions and one bronze medal at the 2011 Rome World Cup.
